Ahmond Green has come a long way since stepping onto the basketball court for the first time. Now, as he enters his third season with NYBA, the young person — who initially struggled with basic basketball fundamentals — has built confidence and advanced his skills. As his journey unfolds, basketball continues to shape him both on and off the court.
“Ahmond has come a long way since he first joined NYBA. It was clear in the beginning that everything was new to him, but we knew that, with time, he would get the hang of it. Like all of us, there’s always more work to be done, but we’re impressed with his growth both on and off the court,” says the NYBA coaching staff.
We caught up with Ahmond, known as “ASG,” to talk about his progress, growth, and what he’s looking forward to this season.
NYBA: How has basketball made an impact on your life?
Ahmond Green: Basketball is fun, and it’s not just about the games. It’s given me confidence. When I first started, I wasn’t sure of myself. Seeing other players who were more skilled was tough. But I stuck with it, kept practicing, and that helped me believe in myself more.
NYBA: Has that confidence carried over off the court?
Ahmond Green: Definitely. I’ve learned to give my best effort no matter where I am — at school, at home, wherever. It’s not always easy, but pushing myself on the court has taught me to work hard in everything I do.
NYBA: You’re now in your third season with NYBA. What are you most excited about this year?
Ahmond Green: NYBA has been a lot of fun. I didn’t know what I was doing when I started, but now I’ve learned the basics, and I’m working on the mental side of the game — like reading the offense and knowing how to defend. My Mom and coaches hold me accountable, and I appreciate that. This season, I’m excited to keep improving, going to practices, and being part of the camps and games.
“Ahmond has been with NYBA for two years, and I’ve seen so much growth in him that makes me proud. It’s no longer just about basketball for him—it’s about being part of a program and supporting each other. He’s matured a lot, especially in his decision-making. I’ve received positive reports about how much Ahmond has grown since last school year, and I credit the NYBA family for that. NYBA has helped teach Ahmond to be his best both on and off the court.” — Ms. Helen, Ahmond’s mother
