Opening Night Recap: Great Energy, Packed Gym, and Big-Time Plays in NYBA Summer League Week 1

Grand Rapids, Michigan-The NYBA Summer League tipped off with four games full of energy, talent, and big-time moments. The atmosphere was electric all night — competitive hoops and a packed gym that set the tone for the season ahead.

Frost 25, Shock 22

In the first matchup of the night, Frost erased an early 6-0 deficit with a 12-0 run of their own and never looked back. That surge was sparked by Klayton Holman, Lawrence Wallace IV, and Carmelo Melton, whose energy flipped the momentum.

  • Personal Run: Muskegon native Kymir Hathorn caught fire in the second half, stringing together a personal 8-0 run for Shock to tie the game late.
  • Clutch Gene: With the score knotted, Holman delivered the go-ahead 3-pointer to seal it.

Ignite 32, Nova 23

Ignite looked sharp from the jump, building an 11-point halftime lead behind a strong showing from Legend Williams and intense ball pressure from BJ Merriweather Jr.

  • Nova’s Response: In the second half, Donell Jones III led a spirited charge, getting to the rim and creating buckets.
  • Takeover Time: But DJ Jobe had answers every time. His crowd-pleasing fourth-quarter performance shut the door on Nova’s comeback attempt.

Storm 35, Prime 32

This one was a game of momentum swings. Prime started strong behind Jaxon Balulis and Jacob Badger, but the Storm locked in after halftime.

  • Third-Quarter Takeover: Storm dominated the third 12-1 behind Jevel Green, who controlled the boards and enforced the paint.
  • Floor General: Juelz Campbell kept the offense flowing, while Joe Rawls added highlight plays.
  • Final Push: Prime made it a one-possession game in the final minutes but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Surge 33, Phantom 32

Phantom came out firing, using a balanced attack from Asher Lucas, Collin Jackson, and Kirky Nash III to build an 11-point halftime lead.

  • Defensive Tone: RJ Armour set the tone early with stops and pressure.
  • Second-Half Surge: Kailin Guyton scored 9 points in the third to spark the comeback, while Ahmond Green and Tylar Cross-Hamilton imposed their will on the glass.
  • Game Winner: Green hit the go-ahead free throw with 33 seconds left. A clutch shot by Nolan Aguilar earlier in the quarter swung the momentum.
