Mesquite, Texas — There was plenty for Texas to learn during its first extended run of programming in Mesquite.
There was also plenty to like.
NYBA established its presence in the North Texas community this spring and summer with basketball classes, Open Gyms and Skills Academy programming, attracting a mix of young players who were relatively new to the game and others who arrived with considerably more experience.
For a market still in the early stages of its development, that combination was encouraging.
Mesquite sits in a part of Texas where basketball interest is hardly difficult to find. The more important task for NYBA has been establishing what its program will represent within that crowded basketball landscape.
Coach Barry has spent much of the early going answering that question through the work on the floor.
His sessions have placed considerable attention on fundamentals, details and teaching the game, an approach that has remained consistent regardless of a player’s experience level. The idea has been to establish habits now that can carry into more competitive opportunities later.
That philosophy became increasingly visible as the Texas calendar expanded.
Skills Academy gave players more consistent developmental work, while Open Gyms allowed Coach Barry to see athletes in a different setting and continue introducing families to the program.
The early returns have been positive enough that NYBA is now preparing to give Texas families considerably more to choose from.
Texas Prepares for Its Next Phase

The organization plans to introduce its tier-based membership structure in Texas for the 2027–28 season, creating separate pathways for developing and more experienced players.
For families newer to basketball, the first tier will emphasize instruction, skill development and increased experience within the game. The second will be designed for players ready for a more competitive environment that can include advanced development, club basketball and travel.
Training camps, additional Open Gyms and club evaluations and tryouts are also expected as part of the upcoming calendar.
The next version of Texas will simply offer more ways for those families to commit.
Families can subscribe to NYBA Texas for updates on membership enrollment, training camps, Open Gyms, evaluations, club tryouts and future programming.
