GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Tournament play brought a different feel to Week 4 of the Grand Rapids All City Fall League.

After one of the league’s highest-scoring weekends in Week 3, the opening round of the tournament slowed things down. Half-court execution mattered more, possessions became harder to replace, and teams that consistently turned stops into quality opportunities found a way to advance.

Michigan Thunder 2032 22 (3-1) defeats Phenom Elite 18 (1-3)

Michigan Thunder 2032 and Phenom Elite opened tournament play with the type of low-possession game where every empty trip mattered.

Tyler Ebels gave Thunder an early lift by knocking down shots, while Caiden Springberg brought an aggressive approach attacking the defense. Phenom stayed within reach behind Alijah Thomas, who put together a strong offensive performance and consistently gave his team an option when points were difficult to find.

The difference came down to taking care of opportunities.

Neither team created much separation, but Michigan Thunder was slightly better at valuing possessions and converting enough of them late. In a four-point tournament game, that margin was enough.

VNYR 33 (4-0) defeats Ball Game 22 (0-4)

VNYR remained unbeaten behind another balanced offensive effort.

Callan Brown established himself early by getting downhill, touching the paint and finishing around the rim. His aggression gave VNYR an early source of offense, but as the game developed, the production became more spread throughout the group.

Ball Game stayed competitive behind a strong first half from Dominick Mitchell, while Drew Knox also gave the offense productive stretches.

But VNYR continued to find the combination that has worked throughout the league: enough shot-making on one end and timely stops on the other. Whenever Ball Game threatened to close the gap, VNYR was able to answer and maintain control.

The win moved VNYR to 4-0 and kept its tournament run alive.

Next Up 59 (4-0) defeats J Cats [SCORE] (0-4)

For most of the afternoon, this looked nothing like the final margin.

J Cats came out aggressively and built an early 9-2 advantage before Aiden Ford completely changed the rhythm of the game. Ford answered with a personal 9-0 run, giving Next Up the spark it needed to settle in.

From there, the teams continued trading stretches.

J Cats received a productive performance from Miles Wierzbicki, and the game remained tied at 40 entering the latter stages. Then Next Up changed the game defensively.

They extended their pressure, sped up J Cats’ decision-making and began turning defensive possessions into opportunities going the other direction. Next Up closed the game on a 19-2 run, transforming a tie game into a convincing tournament win.

Ford’s early response helped keep Next Up connected before its pressure eventually broke the game open.

Michigan Thunder 2031 46 (3-1) defeats Hoop City 34 (1-3)

The final game of the day featured another back-and-forth start before Michigan Thunder 2031 gradually took control.

Hoop City came out with the stronger opening stretch, but Thunder never allowed the early momentum to become sustained separation. Instead, they continued playing through the game and slowly found more consistent offensive opportunities.

Alijah Sydnor delivered several important plays, while Kendall Dillion gave Thunder production in both the open floor and the half court.

That versatility became a difference as the game progressed. When transition opportunities were available, Thunder took advantage. When the game slowed down, they were still able to generate offense without completely relying on pace.

That consistency eventually created the separation Thunder needed to advance.
