Grand Haven-For the first time in program history, the National Youth Basketball Academy ventured west to Grand Haven, Michigan, for an exciting day of competitive basketball against local youth teams from Grand Haven and West Ottawa. The true victories from Sunday lay in the invaluable experience gained by the players.
This event marked an important milestone for NYBA, blending a mix of experienced young talents to develop competitive growth. The games were more than just about winning; they were about building confidence, showcasing hard work, and gaining insights into competitive play.
Building Leaders and Showcasing Progress
One standout from the day was Carmelo Melton, whose vocal leadership and physical play set the tone for the team. With a background in both football and basketball, Carmelo used his competitive edge to guide his teammates on the court.
David Quinonez Jr., known for his dedication as a “gym rat,” demonstrated how his practice efforts translate to game-time performance. This was his first taste of competitive basketball, and he took significant steps forward in his development.
Meanwhile, Bobby Springer Jr., who just finished his first year of organized basketball, showcased hustle and instinct. While his technical skills are still growing, he counted on his effort on both ends of the floor to impact the game.
Kylon Broyles, now in his second year playing basketball, proved that he can impact a game with hustle. Whether it was chasing down loose balls or scoring from the dunker spot, Kylon’s performance reflected his growing confidence.
Young Talent Rising
The NYBA roster also included three second-grade players who earned their first taste of competitive basketball. Trey Lamb, Carter Bell, and JC Tyler embraced the challenge, steadily gaining confidence as the games progressed.
Looking Ahead
This inaugural road trip represents future plans for the 2025-2026 season, as NYBA is finalizing a new model designed to continue offering its players opportunities to grow through practice, recreational and competitive play.
