Braylen Guyton is no stranger to the gym or the basketball court. With his father coaching and his family connected to the sport, Braylen has been surrounded by basketball culture since he was just 3 months old. Whether he was born with a natural love for the game or developed it over time, one thing is clear: Braylen has a passion for basketball.

“It’s been a special experience coaching Braylen,” says Brandoen Guyton, NYBA National Director and Braylen’s father. “Not only has it helped me understand him better as a player, but it’s also allows me to learn more of who see he is as a person. That’s the beauty of coaching him both on and off the court.”

Braylen is entering a new phase in his development as a person and a player.

“He’s turning a new leaf in his game, and it’s exciting to see from a coach’s perspective,” adds the NYBA Coaching Staff. “Braylen’s building strength physically, and that’s enhancing his style of play. He’s also a natural leader. He brings so much energy to every session, and it’s contagious.”

We caught up with Braylen to talk about his journey, his growth over the past two seasons, and how he’s preparing for the season.

NYBA: When did you realize you truly loved playing basketball?

Braylen Guyton: Honestly, for as long as I can remember. I’ve always loved basketball. Even when I was younger, I’d challenge people to play one-on-one. Competing has always been my thing.

NYBA: How have these last two seasons with NYBA impacted you?

Braylen Guyton: I feel like I’ve really started to get better, especially recently. I didn’t always believe in my own strength, but through exercising, literacy, and basketball workouts, I’ve found that my strength isn’t just physical—it’s mental. I’m constantly working on building that inner strength, and that’s where I’ve seen the most growth.

NYBA: How has it been having your dad as your coach?

Braylen Guyton: At first, it was tough. But over time, I’ve realized that my dad pushes me to be the best version of myself. He doesn’t mean any harm when his voice gets loud, and I actually like it now, haha! I’ve watched him coach at the varsity level, so I know this is just a part of him. It’s kind of cool seeing him in two different roles—my dad and my coach.

NYBA: You’re 9 years old in the 5th grade, making you younger than most of the kids in your grade. How do you approach that challenge?

Braylen Guyton: It doesn’t bother me. Right now, some players might be quicker or stronger physically, but my mind is strong. I know if I keep building my mental strength, that will give me an edge. I’ve been playing against taller players my whole life, so I just accept the challenge and use it to get better.

“Braylen’s growth with NYBA has been phenomenal. He pushes himself every day to improve. He’s not only learning how to control the ball, but he’s also building friendships and gaining confidence. Special thanks to his coaches for dedicating their time and effort to work with him. The results are in,  NYBA for the win!” — Ms. Jasmine, Braylen’s Mother
