NYBA Michigan Summer League: Week 2 Delivers Competitive Matchups, Defensive Intensity, and Late-Game Drama

Grand Rapids, Michigan-Week 2 of the NYBA Summer League continued to showcase player development, competitive basketball, and exciting finishes across both the Legacy (12–14U) and Champions (9–11U) Divisions. Several games came down to the final possession, while others highlighted the importance of defensive effort, ball security, and efficient shot selection.

As teams continue building chemistry, the overall quality of play continues to improve heading into Week 3.

Legacy Division (12–14U)

NYBA Black-31 (2-0) defeats NYBA Blue-29 (1-1)

One of the night’s most competitive games featured two evenly matched teams battling from start to finish.

The game swung back and forth throughout all four quarters, with neither team able to create much separation. In the closing moments, NYBA Black capitalized on Blue’s turnovers and a few rushed offensive possessions to secure the victory.

The contest ultimately came down to the final possession, highlighting the competitiveness of the Legacy Division through the first two weeks.

NYBA Red-41 (1-1) defeats NYBA White-28 (0-2)

NYBA Red established control early and never looked back.

Red’s ability to finish efficiently around the basket allowed them to build momentum throughout the game. While NYBA White showed flashes of strong play, inconsistent offensive execution and a lack of defensive urgency prevented them from mounting a sustained comeback.

As the season progresses, improved defensive effort and offensive consistency will be key areas of focus for White.

Champions Division (9–11U)

NYBA Black-35 (1-1) defeats NYBA Blue-29 (0-2)

NYBA Black set the tone from the opening tip with relentless energy and defensive pressure.

First-time Summer League participant Auden Keur sparked the team with his aggressive play and effort on both ends of the floor. Black’s defensive intensity disrupted Blue’s offensive rhythm throughout the game, forcing difficult possessions and limiting quality scoring opportunities.

The defensive effort proved to be the difference as NYBA Black earned its first victory of the season.

NYBA Red-24 (2-0) defeats NYBA White-20 (1-1)

Another instant classic unfolded in the Champions Division.

Both teams competed with tremendous energy from start to finish, trading baskets throughout the contest in a game that remained undecided until the final buzzer.

Bobby Springer Jr. led the charge for NYBA Red with his impact on both offense and defense. In the game’s defining sequence, Makhai Calvert forced a backcourt turnover before converting the go-ahead basket while drawing the continuation foul, giving Red the late advantage and ultimately preserving its undefeated record.
