North Carolina’s Inaugural Season Lays the Foundation for What’s Next

Player development, family support and a growing basketball community highlighted the first chapter of NYBA North Carolina.

Durham, North Carolina-The first half of the inaugural season for NYBA North Carolina has continued to build momentum, with strong participation, energetic environments and growing excitement surrounding future programming opportunities.

Over the past several weeks, North Carolina hosted two age divisions — ages 7-10 and 11-14 — at KIPP Durham and Holt Athletic Association. The sessions marked another step forward for a market that continues to establish its identity through player development and community engagement.

A look inside the numbers and moments that defined the spring:

Two age groups, one vision

Players across both divisions were introduced to the NYBA development model, with an emphasis on repetition, skill application and creating positive experiences through basketball.

The 7-10 age group showcased noticeable growth throughout the season, while the 11-14 division continued to embrace more advanced concepts and competitive play.

A tournament atmosphere

One of the highlights came during the 7-10 tournament experience.

Parents filled the gym with energy, encouragement and celebration as young athletes competed in an environment centered on support and fun.

The atmosphere created plenty of momentum heading into North Carolina’s upcoming summer offerings.

Improvement that families noticed

For many families, the most rewarding part of the experience was witnessing the growth in their children from week to week.

Parent Bryan Dickerson, whose sons Matthew and Owen participated in the program, was especially encouraged by the progress both boys made.

“I was very impressed with their improvement, especially with their dribbling skills,” Dickerson said. “We definitely want to continue with NYBA and whateverprograms they have to offer in the future.”

Feedback similar to Dickerson’s has become increasingly common as North Carolina continues its first season of programming.

Building with the right people

For North Carolina State Director Rodney Coleman, the program’s early success has reinforced the importance of surrounding players with coaches who share the same developmental philosophy.

“What I have discovered is success at this level comes down to having the right people in the gym,” Coleman said. “Our coaching staff has been phenomenal in executing our vision these past few weeks; their commitment to high-repetition fundamentals is exactly why this program is moving in such an exciting direction.”

Looking ahead

While the first season in North Carolina is still being written, the foundation continues to strengthen.

From enthusiastic parents and motivated players to coaches committed to teaching the game the right way, the early returns have created optimism for what comes next.

With summer programming on the horizon, the buzz surrounding NYBA North Carolina is growing — and the second half of the inaugural season has made one thing clear:

Basketball development is thriving in North Carolina.
