Mesquite, Texas- As the summer calendar continues, the focus in Texas has been on building the foundation at the grassroots level.
Three weeks into NYBA Texas Skillz Academy in Mesquite, the progress has been noticeable. Young athletes continue to grow each week as they’re introduced to the fundamentals of the game, developing confidence while building the habits that will serve them for years to come.
The emphasis has been on ball handling, defensive movement, reaction training, defensive awareness, and basketball IQ. Rather than simply teaching drills, the coaching staff has challenged athletes to understand the game by asking questions, making reads, and learning why each skill matters. The objective isn’t just to create better players—it’s to help young athletes develop confidence, decision-making, and a deeper understanding of the game.

According to Texas State Director Coach Barry Murray, the growth has been evident from the very beginning.
“Many of these athletes are being introduced to basketball for the first time, and they’re improving every week. We’re building strong fundamentals through ball handling, defensive awareness, reaction drills, and basketball IQ by asking questions that help players think about the game. It’s been great to see their confidence and understanding of the game continue to grow at their young age.”
That philosophy reflects NYBA’s long-term vision in Texas. The goal isn’t simply to host basketball programs—it’s to introduce families to the organization, provide a positive first basketball experience, and build lasting relationships throughout the Mesquite and surrounding areas. By investing in young athletes early, NYBA is creating an environment where players can continue developing year after year.
With Skillz Academy entering its final stretch, attention is already beginning to shift toward the next opportunity.

Registration is now open for the NYBA Texas Summer Camp, which begins July 10. The camp will continue the same player-first approach, welcoming new athletes while building on the momentum established throughout the summer.
